Pinterest Project of the Week – Duct Tape Silverware Caddy

This week’s project was fairly simple but used one of the hottest DIY materials around right now – Duct Tape! Have you looked at Pinterest lately? Duct tape is taking over people’s furniture, accessories and children! Okay, so I may have made up the children part… but I bet someone out there is outfitting their children in duct tape onesies. Just sayin’.

Anywho, with all the duct tape madness, I thought that maybe it’s actually kind of cute and not cheesy like it seems. I decided to start small and not invest a lot of money nor ruin any of my good stuff. This duct-taped silverware caddy was the perfect first project!

All you need is an empty six pack carton (thank you Kyle for being a brewing master and empty carton hoarder!) and some duct tape. Any craft store or even Wal-Mart has TONS of duct tape to choose from. Seriously, there are at least 30 varieties at any given store right now. I told you duct-taping was hot.

Simply tape away, cutting and tucking where you need to! It’s really simple and you’ll figure it out best as you go. Once you are finished, you’ll have a cutesy silverware caddy that’s perfect for parties or just around the house. (Mine will be hanging out on my newly renovated patio… more on that next week.)

So, where are all my pinners at? What did you create this week?? Check out what others did this week at Mommin’ It Up Pin for the Wednesdays!

P.S. This project cost me about $2. FREE carton & used a 40% off coupon at AC Moore for the duct tape!

*There is no original pin this week as I did not see this specific project on Pinterest. I simply saw A LOT of duct tape.

How to Make Pop Rock Cupcakes

That’s right… pop rocks! Those things that jump around in your mouth and thrilled us all as kids? Well, I bet you never thought to bake them in a cupcake! The fun part is that you can advertise these cupcakes as yummy and including pop rocks OR you can trick everyone and watch their faces when the explosion starts! I personally like the second idea and it’s what I did on July 4th! Among other things… check it out HERE! Now, below are the steps to crafting these yummy yet explosive treats.

1. Buy some cupcake mix and pop rocks. That was hard, right? Actually you may have a hard time finding the pop rocks… I couldn’t find them at CVS but did find them at Dollar General ($1 for a 2 pack). I’d say one pack went about as far as 6 cupcakes.

2. Bake the cupcakes using the directions on the box. IMPORTANT: Let the cupcakes cool down completely! If they are still warm, the pop rocks will “activate” when you dump them in as they are triggered by warmth.

3. Cut a slit into the middle of the cupcake with a butter knife and push it inward from the opposite direction to open the slit up.

4. Dump in the desired amount of pop rocks and squeeze the cupcake back together.

5. Cover the top of the cupcake with a nice layer of icing and decorate if you wish. This is your disguise so remember to not let the slit show! Hehe

6. Enjoy the cupcakes and the show!! We chose to only put pop rocks in every other cupcake that way no one would know what they were getting! (Since some people were nosey and found out what we were doing!)

While this idea was an original, I was inspired by this Pop Rocks Snack pin on Pinterest.

Do you have any other food tricks? I’d love to hear them so I can have more fun with food in the future!

Pinterest Project of the Week – Beach Themed Birthday Party!

The Pinterest Project of the Week is…. DRUMROLL… a cute beach themed party for my four year old nephew (okay, really, he’s my cousin’s son… whatever that makes us). Check it out –

Fun palm tree straws (found at Dollar store)

Shark fin cupcakes! Simple bake your cupcakes, ice them to look like beach waves (thanks Christa!), sprinkle some stars on top (you know, for starfish) and insert a shark fin. I decided to save some money and DIY the shark fins. I already had cardstock and toothpicks in the house so I simply cut the fins out and taped them to toothpicks.

Up close!

Lifesaver cutlery! Simply wrap your plastic cutlery in a beachy blue napkin, secure with twine and knot it around a mint lifesaver.

Blow up palm tree cooler (I think she found this at the Dollar store too)

There’s my BFF and fav cousin, Lindsay, who is also the mama of Zachary. She was decorating and cooking up a storm!

There’s the birthday boy being all shy while we sing Happy Birthday to him!

Check me out on Pinterest: alwaysashley03

On a side note,
Like my birthday party outfit? I love my Forever 21 dress and Michael Shannon wedges.

The Big Bathroom Reveal

The irony here is that my bathroom is not even close to big. You can basically walk forward about 5 steps before you ram your shins into the bathtub. From there you can shuffle to the left and right about two steps before you bang your shins on the toilet or knock yourself unconscious on my new shelf.

Either way, I wanted to give my teeny tiny bathroom a makeover and I wanted to mostly DIY the sucker. So where did I turn? Pinterest of course. Enjoy the tour and sorry for the crappy sideways pictures but remember how tiny it is… kinda hard to take pics when you can’t backup very far.

Overview (except you can’t see the other wall)

Alrighty, so we’re starting with the light switch wall (that I inadvertently covered with my hand towel, that’s only somewhat annoying). I attempted to make a Magnetic Makeup Board but it turned out to be a FAIL, so I bought one instead. I actually really like having my makeup easily accessible on the wall. My cute wire heart hook was part of my Easy Updates week and was only $1.99 from World Market.

Sorry, this was a hard picture to take. These little flower do-hickeys are the coolest things in the world. I randomly found them in an Atlanta Target and just had to have them. They were just under $20 for a 25 pack (or something close to that). Basically you put each 3D flower in the wall individually wherever you like. (Super easy… all you do is put a designed tip tack in the wall and pop the flower on.) I wanted to do something for this terrible mirror, so I framed it in 3D flowers.

Overview of my bathroom counter.

Here’s my wonderful Butterfly Bathroom Jar that holds all of my makeup utensils. My mom took one look and said, “You use all that?” Answer: “No, I use about two things out of that entire jar. But it’s cute right?” 🙂 Also, I keep my hairbrushes in a cheap IKEA vase. Very girly and cute I think.

I really love my Cake Stand in the bathroom. That crazy looking mirror is one of the best purchases of my life. Have I ever told you about the time I fell off the bathroom counter? No? Well well. You know how sometimes you need to see really close in the mirror and you’re leaning way over the counter but it’s just not enough? Well, I would simply climb up on the counter and sit indian style in the sink. As David’s mom asked the other day, “What were you doing? Putting on makeup?” Answer: “No, I was popping a zit.” True story. Well, I must have been mashing really hard because I lost my balance and because my feet were in front of me in the sink, I was pretty screwed. I fell backwards against the door, slid down (pretty fast) and BAM hit the floor landing on my poor behind. I laid there dazed and seeing stars for bit. My Yorkie came up a gave me a lick like “you alright?” I finally regained my equilibrium and got up, but I did have bruises to prove it was a true story. The point is, I could have DIED. What if I had knocked myself unconscious? This handy IKEA mirror retracts from the wall, has two sides (one for up close) and allows me to pop my zits while sitting on the toilet. I know, it’s safe and awesome.

Can you believe how organized that is? Never before has under-the-counter looked so good in my apartment. I found these two organizers a while back on clearance at Target and repurposed them for this project. To the left I have my hair products and to the right I have makeup in the top and facial care items in the bottom. In between I have a tub with feminine products and behind that I have another tub with oral care items.

This is my handy, space-saving over-the-toilet shelf that I found at Goodwill for only $15! (and was already put together) The colorful knobs were $1.99 each from World Market.

All of these goodies were a part of my Bathroom Fun week. The cute little Q-Tip jar was $1.20 from AC Moore, the green basket was on clearance at Michaels and you always need a matching candle (from Michaels).

I utilized the extra space and stored a few things in cute containers on top. I keep all of my hair goodies in that green stackable tupperware container thing (you can find them at Wal-Mart or Target). It has three sections in which I put scrunchies (yes, SCAAA-RUNCHIES said like Carrie in Sex and the City when she’s making fun of Aiden’s book) in the bottom, headbands in the middle, and the top has smaller sections for my ponytails and bobby pins. The black polka-doted bag is my one and only QVC purchase. Inside it I have stored all of my other makeup bags that I’m not currently using but keep because I have an odd obsession with bags. I have an unrelated post about that too called I’m A Proud Bag Lady.

This is my pretty shower curtain from Wal-Mart that my mama gave me when I moved into my new apartment. 🙂 And I just upgraded to those cute wooden button hooks last week (was previously using the horrid plastic ones).

Here’s my matching Wal-Mart rug in front of the bathroom counter and a chocolate brown memory foam rug from Kohls (got a deal – shipped to my door for only $6) in front of the tub. I really want them the other way around but they don’t fit right.

This is the $15 shelf from Goodwill that is going to fall on my head and knock me unconscious, or so I fear. And it’s not just because David put it up. Hehe. It’s because there weren’t any studs in the right places so we rigged this sucker up with pieces of wood and brackets, hoping for the best. Again, my cute knobs came from World Market at $1.99 each.

Here’s another cute $1.99 World Market hook where I hang my used bathroom towel. The clean ones are neatly stacked on top of my shelf. I’ve decided I don’t like towel bars or rings.

In this drawer I hide all of my tanning products. Mostly gifts from my BFF! 🙂

Look at all that space I still have!! On the shelf is a wicker basket holding my nail accessories (polish remover, toe separators, etc), my glass jar that used to be a candle holding nail polish and a cute candle for an added pop of color.

I hope I didn’t bore you to death but I really enjoyed all of my crafty projects and decorating ideas from Pinterest. I think it came together nicely and I estimate that I did the entire bathroom for under $100, including the bathroom furniture. Not too shabby… stay tuned, next I’m transforming my Patio! (and I have some pretty cool ideas brewing, trust me!)

Pinterest Project of the Week – Wax Be Gone

Wax be gone? Yeah. This was one of those DUH! moments on Pinterest. You know, when you see something totally clever and think, “DUH! Why didn’t I think of that?!” So, most of us like candles and candles generally come in glass jars. If you’re like me, you have been wasting those glass jars by simply tossing them in the trash when the wick has seen its last flame. Well, not anymore. Save your candles and get to cleaning out that wax. (It’s actually very simple.)

First, do your candles look like this? Not sure what happened to mine…
Well, that’s just ugly, right?

Step 1. Put your candles in the freezer. Seriously. Wedge them in, right beside all the fattening sweets like I did. Leave them in there for an hour or two. (If you forgot about them and come back a few days later, even better.)

Step 2. Rinse out the jar and remove any stickers. Hot water and soap should make those stickers peel right off and not leave any residue. You’ll also wind up with a black, soot covered washcloth so go ahead and pick an old one.

Step 3. Get to cracking up that wax. I chose a butter knife and simply ran it along the edges and stabbed it in the middle a few times. This should make the wax easily break off into big chunks to where you can just dump it out. The tab in the bottom holding the wick should pop right off too.

Step 3. Break out the EVOO. You don’t have olive oil?? You must not be following in my What’s For Dinner weekly footsteps! If you don’t have any, you can skip this step. The olive oil for some reason makes that film of wax come off really easy, so just dump a little in and use a washcloth to “wash” the glass.

Step 4. Oh, that’s right, you are finished! Only 3 easy peasy steps! Admire how shiny and clean they are.

Now, what are you going to do with them. Well, you could do all sorts of things but here is what I did with one.
I put several of my nail polishes (because I have way more than that) in one jar and displayed them in my bathroom for a pop of color!

This picture is a sneak peek for an upcoming post where I reveal my bathroom DIY makeover… that’s right, all my weekly Pinterest projects have finally concluded an entire room! Stay tuned!

Pinterest Project of the Week – Bathroom Fun!

Okay, so this PPOTW is a little different. It isn’t quite as crafty, but it’s still DIY and all ideas were generated from Pinterest. Hopefully you’ll find a little inspiration in my DIY decorating and storage solutions for the bathroom.

I’m going to start with the best… Toliet Paper! If I had taken a before pictures, you would have noticed that I had an extra pack shoved halfway behind the toliet because, well, I didn’t have anywhere else to put it. But THANK YOU Ross for carrying this wonderful tp storage solution. The vertical storage allows me to slide it into a corner that would have never been used otherwise.

Jars are wonderful for so many things, and that includes bathroom storage! I found this cute, perfect sized jar at AC Moore for $1.99. Of course, I had to have it. (And I kind of want another one… I always feel like I need double, ya know, for symmetry reasons.)

Original Pin: Jars & Canisters in the Bathroom

Do you have boring cabinets? I did! Switching out your knobs is such an easy update and makes a world of difference! (Another great thing is, the knobs can go with you wherever you go. Just keep the old ones.) I updated my over-the-toliet cabinet with these adorable knobs from World Market for only $1.99 each!

Towel rings are a thing of the of the past… Hooks are a much cuter (and cheaper) alternative. I found this cutesy wire heart hook at World Market for only $1.99! It holds my hand towel perfectly. Yes, I realize that I covered up half of the light switch with this particular project… we will see how long before that drives me insane and I end up moving the hook!

Original Pin: Hang Your Towels on Hooks

While cleaning my bathroom yesterday, I found bobby pins everywhere! No fear, a solution is here! Use a magnetic strip to hold all your bobby pins in one place (and if you find one as strong as mine, I guarantee they aren’t going anywhere… I’ll be lucky if I can get the bobby pin off!). My strip came from IKEA for about $2 (had it for a while and just now getting around to using it) but I also found a longer one at World Market yesterday for $4.99. Oh, and you see all those holes below my makeup board? I had an epic FAIL with the drill last night. That’s when I realized oh yeah, this strip is magnetic and my makeup board is magnetic, so duh I can just attach it there!

Original Pin: Bobby Pins Are Magnetic. Duh.

Lastly, I wanted a cuter way to store my everyday beauty products on my counter. I found a few pins on Pinterest for using cake stands and loved it! While browsing around in Marshalls, I found this matching cake stand and bowl (I have no idea what this contraption was supposed to be). While I could’ve did a DIY for this, there’s no way it would have turned out so pretty! I love the look of all glass with beaded edges and you can’t really top the girly, sophisticated look for $15 ($10 for cake stand & $5 for bowl thingy).

This PPOTW post shows you how to decorate on a dime and how to incorporate pieces meant for other uses (like a cake stand). I spent 2.5 hours last night working on my bathroom (cleaning, organizing & decorating) and I am happy to say that it is almost finished! After the boyfriend does a little handy work this weekend, I should be posting the big reveal!

Stay tuned and be sure to check out what everyone else is doing over at Mommin’ It Up for their Pin For the Wednesdays post!

Pinterest Project of the Week – Butterfly Bathroom Jar

This week my project was a small one and I scrambled to do it last minute. 😦 But really, I did another project that was technically a Pinterest project this week. Check out the Kitchen Cake I made for my bestie’s housewarming party.

If you don’t know already, Pinterest has me in the mood to DIY every aspect of my life and well, I
had to pick an area of focus (because quite frankly, I was losing my mind with so many projects awaiting my time) and I chose the bathroom. I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to this DIY Makeover, called Project Bathroom: DIY Makeover so check it out and you’ll have an idea of what’s ahead for my PPOTW posts. By the way, I think I’ll start shortening it to PPOTW (Pinterest Project of the Week) and maybe use even that as a Twitter hashtag #PPOTW… I like it. ANYWHO (have to reign in my ADD in sometimes), this week’s project was sort of a DIY “Do-Over.” I made this jar previously, but instead of making it pretty, I threw some random beads in there and shoved my makeup utensils leaving it as-is. I decided to pretty it up a little. I hope you like it.

This was probably one of the simplest Pinterest projects I’ve made to date. All you do is grab a jar and decorate it the way you like! I chose to layer some ribbon and found this huge butterfly that I just had to have. I know it’s kind of big for the jar size I’m using, but I like it! I then dumped a package of beads (technically they are called Acrylic Discs) inside and started shoving it full of my makeup and utensils. Basically, anything that I couldn’t stick a magnet on for my Magnetic Makeup Board project last week, I stuck in here! Woohoo – I think I have my makeup organized!

You can find my inspiration pin HERE.

And, before you go, check out Mommin’ It Up’s Pin for the Wednesday post where I always link up and find great ideas!
